Dumpster Rental in West Columbia, SC
West Columbia is its own city in Lexington County — not a neighborhood of Columbia, and not governed by Columbia's rules. That distinction matters the moment you want a container anywhere but your own driveway.
The permit point most people get wrong
A lot of homeowners here assume "Columbia area" means City of Columbia rules apply. It does not. West Columbia is a separate incorporated municipality in Lexington County, with its own government and its own right-of-way requirements.
So the City of Columbia temporary encroachment permit — the one handled through Columbia's Planning & Development department — is not the permit you need in West Columbia. If you are placing a container in a West Columbia street, contact the City of West Columbia directly.
On your own driveway or private property, none of this applies.
One further wrinkle worth knowing: parts of the City of Columbia itself extend across the river into Lexington County. Being in Lexington County does not automatically mean you are outside Columbia city limits. If you are near the boundary, confirm the address rather than assuming.
What West Columbia properties are like
The older sections near the river and State Street have the same constraints as in-town Columbia — narrower lots, shorter driveways, mature trees over the approach. A 20 yard needs roughly 42 feet of length and about 20 feet of overhead clearance, and older streets here often do not offer both.
Newer development out toward the Airport Boulevard corridor and the Lexington side generally has the room.
