Neighborhood notes
Older in-town neighborhoods — Shandon, Elmwood Park, Earlewood, Rosewood — often have short, narrow driveways and mature tree canopy. They also carry lead and asbestos considerations worth reading before you start: dumpster rental in Columbia's older neighborhoods. Both matter: the truck needs roughly 20 feet of vertical clearance to raise the bed. These are the areas where street placement and a temporary encroachment permit come up most often.
Downtown and the Vista are frequently in state-maintained right-of-way, which means an SCDOT permit in addition to the city one. Start that early.
Newer subdivisions in Blythewood, Chapin, Irmo and Lexington usually have wide driveways and clear approaches — the easy case — but check your HOA's rules on container size and how long it can sit.
"Columbia area" is not one jurisdiction
Worth knowing before you plan street placement: this metro crosses county and municipal lines constantly.
- Irmo and Cayce each sit in both Lexington and Richland counties
- Forest Acres has been its own city since 1935, not part of Columbia
- Blythewood's mailing address area is much larger than its town limits
- The City of Columbia itself extends across the river into Lexington County
- Elgin is primarily in Kershaw County, not Richland
So a mailing address tells you very little about which permit rules apply. The specific address does. If the container is going on your own driveway none of it matters — but for street placement, ask first.
Give us the address and we will tell you what applies. Call (803) 594-8907.
